I was three the first time I froze on a stage. I got it wrong, felt every eye, and decided the stage was dangerous.
It took me years, a record deal, lead roles and stages of thousands to learn what finally ended the fear. The moment I stopped trying to get something from the room, and started giving the room something, there was nowhere left for fear to live.
Later, my coach at The Voice of Holland gave me the words for what my body already knew:
“When you’re afraid on stage, you came to take. When you come to give, there is no fear.”
Then the pandemic took my stages, and I had to rebuild from a quieter place. It taught me that I’m not here to prove myself. I’m here to be present with what I have to give.
